Prior to 1959, the majority of people living in Cuba had little access to rudimentary healthcare, education or adequate housing. Cuba has worked very hard since 1959 to produce healthy, educated workforce nationally. Housing is still a concern for many Cubans.
The population of Cuba is vaccinated against common childhood infections. Prenatal care is given to all women. HIV screening is voluntary except for people with known HIV contact, venereal diseases or pregnancy. Cuba has the lowest prevalence of HIV (0.03%) in the Western Hemisphere.
Preventive care is listed as a priority but some Cubans tend to use tobacco and alcohol excessively. Healthcare in Cuba is free but is constrained by lack of availability of modern facilities and medications.
